I absolutely love Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin. It came out in 2000 and is on Time Magazines 100 Greatest Novels of All Time List. It really is amazing. It weaves 3 stories together seamlessly and really throws you for a loop in the end. The best part is, the plot is NOT betrayed by reading the back. It only tells you about the first 47 some-odd pages. Great read and read author!
There are so many! To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. I read this at least once a year, and it is still one of the funniest books I've read. Combining time travel, a spoof on the Victorian comedy of manners, a romance, WW2 history, a series of misunderstandings, a really ugly dog and some even uglier artwork, Willis entertains and makes you think, all at the same time.
Sure. Anything by Stuart Dybek. He's a Chicago native who writes very surreal, but touching short stories about characters from his neighborhood of Little Village and Pilsen. Dybek was a writing professor at Western Michigan University until this past year when he accepted a position at Northwestern. My favorite collection of his, The Coast Of Chicago, was the "One Book, One Chicago" selection for 2004. I also really like "I Sailed With Magellan", which again are short stories but they follow a loose narrative that runs throughout. Good stuff.
